Message from the Director General, IP Office

The process of rapid industrialization plays a significant role in economic development of the country which ultimately leads to wealthy and prosperous life. The artisans, researches, scientists, innovators, technologist, creators etc are the main contributors/prime movers of industrial development by supplying new designs, tools, technology, methods and trademarks. It is obvious that the pace of industrial development can be accelerated only if we can encourage or motivate to the investors or creators for inventing/creating new things in the society. The system of protection of industrial property rights in particular and intellectual property rights in general inspires or motivates to them.

Nepal joined in world intellectual property organization (WIPO) in 1997 and entered into the Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property in 2001. In the process globalization Nepal has become the member of World Trade Organization (WTO) in April 2004 expressing many more commitments to comply the WTO principals & procedures in general and business related understanding with the existing several member countries in particular. Thus, it has become necessary to enhance the existing industrial property (IP) system of the country not only to increase Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) flow but also do make our IP system compatible with the various provisions of Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS).

I hope the information provided through the website; www.nipo.gov.np could serve the interest of innovators, business community, attorneys, consumers, investors and other professionals working in this area for the protection of Industrial Property right.

Tana Gautam
Director General
